Carlsbad Medical Center offers specialized nursing services for wounds, ostomies and incontinence conditions. Consultations by physician referral include evaluation and treatment to promote healing of chronic wounds and pressure ulcers, follow-up/maintenance care after ostomy surgery, and patient/family education.
Lynda Bickerstaff, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Nurse, provides nursing care services through Carlsbad area physician referrals. An experienced hospital nurse and career nursing professor at New Mexico State University – Carlsbad, Bickerstaff is available for appointments between 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at Pendrak Surgical Clinic at 2402 W. Pierce Street, Suite 5A. Physicians may make referrals by phoning 575-887-5321.
Bickerstaff explains that the certified WOC nurse serves as a liaison with other healthcare team members, contributing knowledge of wound and ostomy treatment and products; supply cost reduction; optimizing patient healing; decreasing skin complications; documenting patient care; and preparing patients for self-management. Her patient care services are typically covered by Medicare and Medicaid health plans.
A career NMSU-C nursing professor for 18 years, Bickerstaff earned a Masters Degree in Medical/Surgical Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso. She received her training as a Certified WOC Nurse from Albany Medical Center, New York.
