What is the pelvic floor?
It is a group of muscles and connective tissue that go across the pelvis like a hammock in order to support organs, perform bowel and bladder functions and contribute to the ability to carry and lift objects.
How can pelvic floor therapy help me?
Pelvic floor therapy is a specialty of physical therapy in which pelvic floor muscular, bowel, bladder and sexual function and pelvic pain is assessed and treated. Treatment and a home program allows you to progress and improve your symptoms.
This therapy is a combination of:
- Learning muscle relaxation and strengthening techniques
- Assessing lifting techniques and performance of daily tasks
- Manual therapy to improve pain and symptoms
- Addressing daily fluid intake and dietary habits
- Developing an individualized plan to improve your quality of life.
Who is this therapy for?
Our Level 1 pelvic floor-certified physical therapist can treat women and individuals with female genitalia/vulva who have any of the following diagnoses or symptoms:
- Pelvic pain
- Urinary incontinence or leakage
- Prolapse
- Pregnancy
- Peri partum
- Sciatic pain
- Back pain
- Diastasis recti
- Pubic symphysis pain
- Hip/groin pain
- Abdominal scar pain
- Pain with sex
- Vaginal pain
- Vulvodynia
- Vaginismus
- Dyspareunia
