The staff at the Sleep Center at Carlsbad Medical Center performs sleep studies on patients aged 18 and older. Sleep studies at the Sleep Center take place in comfortable, home-like rooms. Advanced equipment monitors and records the persons' reaction to sleep, including:
- Brain waves
- Breathing
- Eye movement
- Heart rate
- Muscle activity
- Oxygen level
Common sleep disorders include:
- Sleep apnea – when a person stops breathing and then starts again many times at night
- Narcolepsy – when a person falls asleep suddenly many times a day
- Chronic insomnia – when a person has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep night after night
- Restless leg syndrome (RLS) – when a person loses sleep because of a restless feeling in the legs
